This Speaker concept was developed for my Second-year studio 2 class. The Prompt was to create a product that follows a company’s branding guidelines and would appear to be a product that the company could develop.

All rendering and development was done within Blender and Adobe Illustrator.

How can we make a product that both carries Spotify’s design language and harbors high quality features and sounds?

Creating a product that emphasizes connectivity between both individuals and other devices maximizes the efficiency of use and function.

Aesthetics

Focusing on functionality and minimalist design language the Spotify Mini will be a perfect combination of both.

Sound Quality

By using our user data we will be able to curate a seamless audio experience for the user, by also looking at previous data from other speakers we can create a device that is perfect for all types of audio.

Usability

We emphasize usability because we want our products to be intuitive and to solve problems our current competitors choose not to solve. In order to create the perfect speaker everything must be thought of.

Design Goals

The Spotify Car Thing.

The Car Thing.

The Car Thing. was developed by Spotify as their first physical product.

It allowed users to play their favorite music in their car using the Spotify UI.

The unfortunate story of the Car Thing is that when Spotify put the Car Thing to market there were not enough sales to justify the investment put into the product. So ultimately it was canceled and Spotify stopped production.

Key Features

  • The top of the Mini features a Touch LCD Display which allows users to interact with the Spotify UI.

  • The Green Ring is a Haptic Feedback Dial which allows users to bind different patterns as input for other features. The default for the ring is volume control as well as song selection.

  • The Gray Ring is made of a soft yet durable speaker fabric which allows the pass through of high quality sound from the speakers within the Mini.

  • The bottom of the Mini has Rubber Stopers in the shape of the Spotify Logo which allows a tactile grip on any surface the Mini is placed on.
